About Us

Rooted in the Wild Heart
of South Africa

De Villiers Aloe Exporters (Pty) Ltd was founded in 1956 in the Eastern Cape, and has spent nearly seven decades specialising exclusively in dehydrated Aloe ferox extract. Operating from the Eastern Cape — the natural home of wild Cape Aloe — we source directly from sustainable, community-partnered harvesting operations across the Karoo and Cape regions.

Our manufacturing facility processes raw bitter sap from freshly cut Aloe ferox leaves into premium-grade solid lump and granulated extract, exported to clients across Europe, Asia, North America and the Middle East. Nearly 70 years of expertise makes De Villiers the most established name in Aloe ferox bitter extract supply.

The Difference Matters

Why Aloe Ferox Outperforms
Aloe Vera

International buyers often assume all aloe extracts are equivalent. They are not. Aloe ferox — the Cape Aloe of South Africa — is a fundamentally different species with a markedly superior biochemical profile, grown in richer soils and wilder conditions.

✦ Recommended

Aloe ferox
Cape Aloe

  • Aloin A & B content 11–18% in bitter sap extract — significantly higher than cultivated Aloe vera, far more potent for laxative and detoxifying applications.
  • Wild-growing & pesticide-free — thrives in pristine Karoo soils. No irrigation, fertilisers, or pesticides. Naturally organic by environment.
  • 70+ bioactive compounds including anthraquinones, polysaccharides, glycoproteins, vitamins, minerals, and unique feroxins not found in Aloe vera.
  • Single-species purity — each plant a mature wild specimen of 5–10 years, harvested once annually. No monoculture compromising phytochemical density.
  • Higher mineral density — richer in calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc due to the unique mineral composition of Eastern Cape and Karoo soils.
  • Sustainable wild harvest — leaves cut without uprooting, allowing regrowth. Regulated by South Africa's NEMBA to prevent over-exploitation.
  • Traditional & clinical heritage — used medicinally for centuries; subject of peer-reviewed studies on anti-inflammatory and anti-diabetic properties.
Standard Commodity

Aloe vera
Barbadensis Miller

  • Aloin typically <10 ppm in most commercial products, often deliberately decolourised — stripping out the key bioactive bitter fraction.
  • Commercially cultivated — grown in large monoculture plantations reliant on irrigation, fertilisers and pesticide application.
  • Narrower phytochemical profile — primarily valued for gel polysaccharides (acemannan); lacks the full spectrum found in Aloe ferox.
  • Heavily diluted market — frequent adulteration and variable quality; standardisation is a well-documented challenge across global supply chains.
  • Lower mineral profile — cultivated in uniform soils; less exposure to the mineral-rich geologies that amplify Aloe ferox potency.
  • Environmental impact concerns — plantation agriculture raises land-use, water consumption, and biodiversity concerns not applicable to wild ferox.
  • Ubiquitous commodity — available from hundreds of producers globally; difficult to differentiate on provenance, purity or bioactivity.

Export Products

Dehydrated Aloe Ferox
Extract — Two Forms

Our core export product is dehydrated bitter aloe ferox extract in its two traditional forms — the characteristic hard, black, resinous solid lump, or standardised granulated crystals for precise pharmaceutical and nutraceutical formulation.

Cape Aloe Bitter Lump — black resinous solid extract
Solid Lump Form

Cape Aloe
Bitter Lump

Produced by the centuries-old tapping method — bitter sap drains by gravity from freshly cut wild leaves, then is evaporated to yield the characteristic hard, black, resinous lump. Brittle and glossy with conchoidal fracture — the most concentrated, unprocessed form of bitter aloe extract.

Aloin 11–18% Moisture < 8% Hard black / dark brown Resinous · glossy

Typical applications: Herbal laxatives, digestive supplements, veterinary formulations, traditional medicine preparations, Schwedenbitters.

Cape Aloe Bitter Crystals — granulated dark brown extract
Granulated Crystal Form

Cape Aloe
Bitter Crystals

The solid bitter lump is carefully milled and screened to produce free-flowing dark brown to black granulated crystals of uniform particle size. Retains full aloin potency while offering precise dosability and superior flow properties — ideal for automated capsule filling and tablet compression.

Aloin 11–18% Particle size: various Moisture < 8% Standardised 20kg boxes

Typical applications: Nutraceutical capsules, dietary supplements, cosmetic active ingredient, pharmaceutical excipient.

Standards & Process

Quality You Can
Verify & Trust

Every consignment is backed by comprehensive analytical documentation and third-party laboratory verification. Transparency at every step of the supply chain is non-negotiable.

01

Wild Harvest

Leaves harvested by hand from mature wild Aloe ferox plants in the Eastern Cape and Karoo, under NEMBA permit and sustainability protocols.

02

Sap Collection

Bitter sap drains naturally from cut leaves into collection vessels. No solvents. No chemicals. Traditional gravity-drain method preserves full bioactivity.

03

Lump Formation

Sap is slowly evaporated using state-of-the-art electrical stainless steel pots under controlled heat to form the hard, black, resinous aloe lump. For crystals, cooled lump is milled and screened to target particle size.

04

QC & Export

Standard batch testing covers aloin content and moisture. Heavy metals, pesticide residues and microbiological profiles available on request.

GMP Certified Facility

Manufacturing under Good Manufacturing Practice guidelines, ensuring consistent product quality across all batches.
